Hardwood Windows & Doors for Listed Buildings and Heritage Properties

The building has a rough-textured exterior, featuring multiple white-framed windows and white doors. It is set in an outdoor environment with a black trash bin and some greenery visible.

Our products

When it comes to hardwood windows for listed buildings, the margin for error is zero. All works to listed buildings must follow the legal framework set out in the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990— and conservation officers scrutinise every detail, from glazing bar widths to sill profiles and frame materials.

About

Why Hardwood is the Required Material

There are around 380,000 listed buildings in England, with Grade II buildings making up approximately 92% of all listed buildings in the UK.For the vast majority of these properties, timber is not just the preferred choice — it is the only acceptable one.

Where window replacement is agreed, local planning authorities expect the replacement to use a suitable hardwood, European softwood, or metal. uPVC will not be considered acceptable. Traditional timber is often the preferred — and sometimes the only — material choice in conservation contexts. This preference is rooted in historical authenticity: timber has been a fundamental building material for centuries, and virtually all properties historically featured timber windows. Specifying hardwood is not simply a stylistic decision — it is frequently a planning requirement. Country Hardwood manufactures to the standards conservation officers expect.

Windows We Manufacture for Listed & Heritage Properties

Our manufacturing systems are designed to handle the complexity that heritage projects demand. We regularly produce:

  • Victorian and Georgian sash windows — traditional box sash designs with weights and pulleys, crafted to match the architectural character of period properties
  • Timber flush casement windows — clean-lined flush profiles suited to period and conservation properties, with concealed hardware and hidden ironmongery
  • Timber stormproof casement windows — where the profile and conservation context permits, offering excellent weather performance with a traditional appearance
  • Oak mullion windows — traditional multi-light designs for period properties, farmhouses and older heritage buildings
  • Curved and gothic glazing bars — for ecclesiastical, vernacular and architecturally complex buildings
  • Arched-head feature windows — manufactured from scratch to match existing architectural details on heritage properties
  • Hardwood entrance doors — period-appropriate designs available with complementary heritage ironmongery options

Double glazing is available across all window types. Where conservation requirements are a consideration, glazing options and unit specifications can be discussed at enquiry stage.

    Conservation Area Projects

Under Section 72 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, any development in conservation areas must preserve or enhance the character of the conservation area.

Planning permission is typically required for window replacements, with local planning authorities carefully scrutinising proposals — restrictions often extend beyond the choice of materials to glazing patterns, window profiles, and opening mechanisms.

We are experienced in supplying windows and doors that satisfy these requirements — producing joinery that maintains original proportions and period details while incorporating modern security and weather sealing performance.
